Fire Door Inspections for Care Homes & Residential Care Providers

Protect Your Residents, Starting with Your Doors

Care home providers look after people who may be unable to escape a fire without help. Fire Door Consultants provides independent, FDIS-certified fire door inspections for care homes, so you can protect residents and staff and evidence compliance to regulators.

Independent & Impartial

We have no involvement in fire door installation or repair — our only interest is compliance that is cost effective for the client.

In a care home, many residents cannot leave quickly without help, and a fire at night leaves only a small staff team to move them. Fire doors create the protected space that makes safe, staged evacuation possible. A door with a damaged seal, a poorly fitting leaf or a closer that no longer works will not do that job. Our FDIS-certified inspectors assess every door and give you the documented evidence that your fire safety measures are being maintained.

WHY IT MATTERS

Fire Door Risks Specific to Care Homes

Care homes combine vulnerable residents, sleeping accommodation and limited night-time staffing. Understanding the risks is the first step to managing them.

01

Residents Who Cannot Self-Evacuate

Residents may have limited mobility or dementia, so staff rely on fire doors to hold back smoke and flame while people are moved to safety.

02

Night-Time Staffing Levels

With fewer staff on duty overnight, bedroom and corridor doors must work reliably to buy time for a staged evacuation.

03

Doors Held Open for Comfort & Access

Doors are often wedged open for access, comfort or supervision, which defeats their purpose unless they are fitted with approved hold-open devices that release on the alarm.

04

Regulatory Scrutiny

Care providers are inspected on the safety of their premises, and fire and rescue authorities can take enforcement action where fire doors are not properly maintained.

Your Legal Obligations as a Care Home Provider

Care home providers must meet several overlapping duties and standards, all of which affect how fire doors are specified, maintained and inspected:

  • The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – the responsible person must carry out and keep under review a fire risk assessment, and ensure fire safety measures, including fire doors, are properly maintained
  • The Building Safety Act 2022 – amended the Fire Safety Order so that responsible persons must record their fire risk assessment findings and fire safety arrangements in full
  • The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 – registered providers must ensure premises and equipment are safe and properly maintained
  • HM Government fire safety risk assessment guidance for residential care premises – a recognised reference for assessing fire safety in care homes
  • The Building Regulations 2010 and Approved Document B – set the fire door requirements for new building work and alterations

If you are unsure whether the fire doors across your home are maintained to the standard your fire risk assessment relies on, an independent inspection is the clearest and most cost-effective way to find out.
