Fire Door Inspections for Hospitals, Clinics, GP Surgeries & Healthcare Premises
Keep Patients Safe, Starting with Your Doors
Healthcare providers must protect patients who often cannot evacuate themselves, alongside staff and visitors. Fire Door Consultants provides independent, FDIS-certified fire door inspections for hospitals, clinics, surgeries and dental practices, with clear evidence for your fire risk assessment and regulators.
FDIS Certified Inspectors
Accredited under the Fire Door Inspection Scheme — recognised by local authorities and licensing bodies.
Audit-Ready Reporting
Clear, photo-evidenced inspection reports structured to support your fire risk assessment and evidence for regulators and auditors.
Independent & Impartial
We have no involvement in fire door installation or repair — our only interest is compliance that is cost effective for the client.
In healthcare, many occupants cannot leave quickly without help, so fire doors do more than separate rooms: they create the protected space that makes phased evacuation possible. A door with a damaged seal, a poorly fitting leaf or a closer that no longer works will not do that job. Our FDIS-certified inspectors assess every door and give you the documented evidence that your fire safety measures are being maintained.
WHY IT MATTERS
Fire Door Risks Specific to Healthcare Premises
Healthcare buildings combine vulnerable occupants with constant activity and complex layouts. Understanding the risks is the first step to managing them.
01
Occupants Who Cannot Self-Evacuate
Patients may be immobile, sedated or dependent on equipment, so staff rely on fire doors to hold back smoke and flame while people are moved to safety.
02
Constant Traffic & Equipment
Trolleys, beds and wheelchairs strike doors and frames all day, and doors are often held open for convenience, so damage and misuse build up quickly.
03
Services Passing Through Walls
Frequent changes to cabling, pipework and medical gases can breach fire compartmentation, and fire doors are often altered or wedged to accommodate them.
04
Regulatory Scrutiny
Healthcare providers are inspected on the safety of their premises, and fire and rescue authorities can take enforcement action where fire doors are not properly maintained.
Your Legal Obligations as a Healthcare Provider
Healthcare providers must meet several overlapping duties and standards, all of which affect how fire doors are specified, maintained and inspected:
- The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – the responsible person must carry out and keep under review a fire risk assessment, and ensure fire safety measures, including fire doors, are properly maintained
- The Building Safety Act 2022 – amended the Fire Safety Order so that responsible persons must record their fire risk assessment findings and fire safety arrangements in full
- The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 – registered providers must ensure premises and equipment are safe and properly maintained
- The Building Regulations 2010 and Approved Document B – set the fire door requirements for new building work and alterations
- Health Technical Memorandum 05-02 (Firecode) – NHS technical guidance on fire safety in healthcare premises, widely used as a benchmark by other providers
If you are unsure whether the fire doors across your premises are maintained to the standard your fire risk assessment relies on, an independent inspection is the clearest and most cost-effective way to find out.
