Fire Door Inspections for Schools, Academies, Colleges & Universities
Protect Every Pupil, Starting with Your Doors
Schools and colleges carry a legal duty to keep everyone on site safe, and fire doors are central to that duty. Fire Door Consultants provides independent, FDIS-certified, Enhanced DBS-checked fire door inspections, planned around your timetable, so you can evidence compliance and keep pupils, staff and visitors safe.
FDIS Certified Inspectors
Accredited under the Fire Door Inspection Scheme — recognised by local authorities and licensing bodies.
Audit-Ready Reporting
Clear, photo-evidenced inspection reports structured to support your fire risk assessment and assurance to governors or trustees.
Independent & Impartial
We have no involvement in fire door installation or repair — our only interest is compliance that is cost effective for the client.
In a school, fire doors are what stop a fire in one room from cutting off the escape route for hundreds of children. A door with a damaged intumescent seal, a gap that is too large, or a closer that no longer works will not hold back smoke and flame; it is a liability. Our FDIS-certified inspectors assess every door and give you the documented evidence that your fire safety measures are being maintained.
WHY IT MATTERS
Fire Door Risks Specific to Education Buildings
Education sites combine large numbers of young occupants with heavy daily use. Understanding the risks is the first step to managing them.
01
Large Numbers & Reliance on Staff
Hundreds or thousands of pupils may need to leave quickly, many of them young or with additional needs. Fire doors protect the escape routes they depend on.
02
Heavy Daily Wear
Thousands of door movements each day, kicked and wedged doors, and worn closers, hinges and seals mean damage builds up quickly and often goes unreported.
03
Complex, Extended Buildings
Many sites combine older blocks with later extensions. Holiday refurbishments and cabling work can also leave gaps that weaken fire compartmentation.
04
Clear Accountability
Responsibility for fire safety sits with a named person or body, such as the headteacher, governing body or trust. Failing to maintain fire doors can lead to enforcement action from the fire and rescue authority.
Your Legal Obligations as an Education Provider
Schools, colleges and universities must meet several overlapping duties and standards, all of which affect how fire doors are specified, maintained and inspected:
- The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – the responsible person must carry out and keep under review a fire risk assessment, and ensure fire safety measures, including fire doors, are properly maintained
- The Building Safety Act 2022 – amended the Fire Safety Order so that responsible persons must record their fire risk assessment findings and fire safety arrangements in full
- The Building Regulations 2010 and Approved Document B – set the fire door requirements for new building work and alterations
- Building Bulletin 100 – Department for Education guidance on the design of fire safety in new and refurbished schools
- HM Government fire safety risk assessment guidance for educational premises – a recognised reference for assessing fire safety in schools and colleges
If you are unsure whether the fire doors across your site are being maintained to the standard your fire risk assessment relies on, an independent inspection is the clearest and most cost-effective way to find out.
